The Power of Intimacy & غزل

Exhibited at the American University of Beirut (AUB) Gallery in the exhibition “Facing the White Cube”

2018

This work responds to the 1627 Safavid miniature Shah ‘Abbas with a Page Boy by Muhammad Qasim, originally part of Shah ‘Abbas’ personal album. In the original, the Shah appears relaxed, almost tender, within a lush garden—an image of luxury, control, and restrained intimacy. My interpretation deconstructs this miniature form, unraveling its quiet complexity to examine the dynamics of power, desire, and representation embedded within it. Through scale, gesture, and layering, the work reflects on how such historical images continue to echo in contemporary conversations around authority, masculinity, and the gaze.
